Managing kit weights has always been a manual chore - and a common source of errors. With the latest Kit Builder update, that chore is gone. Kit Builder now automatically calculates the total weight of each kit variant based on the weights of its individual components, and pushes the result straight to BigCommerce. No spreadsheets, no manual edits, no mismatches at shipping time.
Why Accurate Kit Weight Matters
Shipping carriers price by weight. If your kit weight is wrong, you either absorb the difference or charge customers more than you should. With kits that bundle multiple components, the risk compounds: update a component, forget to update the kit, and your shipping rates drift out of sync with reality. Automatic weight calculation closes that gap permanently.

How It Works
When automatic weight sync is enabled, Kit Builder fetches the current weight of every component variant that belongs to a kit. For each kit variant, it then calculates the total weight by multiplying each component's weight by the quantity included in that variant and summing the results. The final value is written back to the corresponding BigCommerce product variant automatically.
The calculation respects variant-level quantities, so if one kit variant includes two units of a component and another includes three, each gets the correct total - not a one-size-fits-all estimate.
Bulk Recalculation on Demand
Beyond automatic updates, you can trigger a bulk recalculation across all kits in your store at any time from the Kit Builder dashboard. This is useful after a supplier updates component specifications or after a product catalog import, when many weights may have changed at once. Each kit is processed as a background job so the update never blocks your store.
